Woodrow Landfair, a creative writing graduate, decided one day that the only way to write about people is to travel thru the hills and highways of our great country. He left with a few thousand dollars and a motorcycle, he never rode before! He had no plan except to try to reach 48 states, and meet as many different kinds of people from all walks of life.
In July '06 he quit his job, pawned what he had (computer, television, stereo--everything) and took off to pursue a dream. He has a degree in Creative Writing and had always had this plan...it was time to put it to use.
The idea was to travel the country working odd jobs. To live the life of a modern hobo. To learn the stories of America. To tell them and to write them.
To ease expenses he sold his car and purchased a motorcycle to undertake this Odyssey. Despite having never ridden a motorcycle, he took off immediately. He had in his pocket only $3,000.
Landfair stated, “I've worked an array of odd jobs--bouncer, door-to-door salesman, roomservice bellhop, bartender, lifeguard...I spent five weeks volunteering in the Katrina-ravaged Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans.
I've stayed with millionaires. I've stayed in homeless shelters. I've been helped by prostitutes, drug addicts, and drug-addicted prostitutes. I've been taken for rides in private planes.
I've had lucrative windfalls. I've been down to my last dollar--literally. I've performed in auditoriums, town halls, bars and coffee shops. I want to become a voice of my generation. I'm in a curriculum of self-education.”
Woodrow shared some of his experiences that he is writing about for a future book!
My First night on the road centered on the uncertainties of my first day, segues into my best friend, an Army reservist who's shipped to Iraq. Texas. July '06.
NYC Homeless Shelter Based on the unlikely friendship between a nineteen year old black boy and a gray bearded white man who I watched meet inside Bellevue Hospital. New York City, NY. November '06.
Lower Ninth Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana Based on my days gutting houses in the heart of the Katrina Disaster and the madness of its aftermath. New Orleans, LA. February '07.
Seventh Ward Family Shelter A story from the 5 weeks I spent running this shelter. An assistant and I lived in and oversaw a one-bedroom house of 10 homeless people—5 adults and 5 children under age 10. How did I, a 24 year-old with no experience, end up with this task? The Shelter Manager had a heart attack. New Orleans, LA. March '07.
Out of Gas in Death Valley when I arrive at one of the Valley's few gas station's only to find it boarded shut, I have one option—to get out of the desert by any means possible. Out of curiosity and desperation I wander inside a 19th century castle and must flee immediately when I discover I'm not alone. German tourists save the day. Death Valley, CA. May '07.
