New York Fashion Week: Lift Off

New York, September 7-10 – Whoa, Chris Aire must be going with plus-size models this season, we thought, when the first mannequin stepped on the runway at his Friday night jewelry show. But when this husky guy picked up a microphone and began singing in a velvety voice, we realized that was no model! It was Cee-Lo from Gnarls Barkley, singing his hit song, "Crazy".

It was a nice opening for a fashion show, compared to Baby Phat, where rapper Fifty Cent got his front row neighbor to change seats by threatening to hit him with a chair. (It worked, too. We’re going to try it next time someone steals our seats.) Fitty had just been arrested that afternoon, and another legally challenged guest at the show was Lil' Kim.

That afternoon, Courteney Cox was at the Bryant Park tents, where the fashion shows are held, for her schtick as spokesperson for skincare line Kinerase. This time she didn’t bring along husband David Arquette and daughter Coco.

We were happy to see that designer Jenni Kayne, who always has a big celebrity quotient at her L.A. shows, has started to reel them in back East. She had Mischa Barton avoiding us at her Saturday show, and Jared Leto, who wears makeup and goes to fashion shows, but is not gay.
