There were no surprises in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section division 5 playoffs,as four favorites advanced convincingly, setting up what should be two highly competetive semi-final games next week. The Central Catholic Raiders cruised to a 37-0 win over Ripon. Central will host Escalon who shutout Argonaut 27-0. Modesto Christian's Crusaders beat Hilmar 24-7 and will host Patterson who blanked Calaveras 23-0 ,in the other semi-final matchup.
Central Catholic controlled Ripon from the outset but Ripon played a spirited game and hit hard till the final gun. After a 35 yard field goal by Central's Matt Burkett opened the scoring, Chase Deadder caught a 16 yard T.D. from Luis Bland and Bland ran another T.D.in from 16 yards , the Raiders were leading at halftime 17-0.
Bryce Bailey scored 2 touchdowns on a 12 yard run and on a short pass from QB Rueben Ramos that he sprinted 51 yards to paydirt.
The Escalon Cougars held Argonaut scoreless ,while opening up thier passing game,in an easy win. Jeremey Puthoff scored on a 13 yard run and caught touchdown passes of 41 and 8 yards from QB Nick Aprile. Puthoff finished with 5 catches for 92 yards and ran for another 86 yards on 12 carrys. Aprile completed 9 of 14 passes for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Patterson posted the third first round shutout over Caleveras 23-0. Daniel Reza threw 2 touchdowns to Mariano Orteaga covering 82 and 8 yards and Robby Semano scampered 72 yards for a score as patterson beat Caleveras for the 4th time in 2 years. Patterson now takes on undefeated Modesto Christian.
After last week's huge win over Escalon the Crusaders looked a little sloppy but still controlled Hilmar 24-7. Zack Sudfeld caught a 13 yd. Touchdown from Jesse White and Matt Sudfeld scored on runs 56 and 50 yards. M.C. had 420 yds. total offense while holding Hilmar to 147.
