Fierce fighting broke out in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday, killing two Palestinians and injuring 30 more.
The battle began when Israeli troops entered the city square to arrest wanted militants. Palestinians threw rocks at the soldiers from store fronts and on roof tops and later torched their vehicle while militants fired bullets at them. By the end of the incident, the square was completely covered in stones according to witnesses.
The Israeli army was successful in arresting Islamic Jihad leader Mohammed al Shubaki along with four other wanted men. Islamic Jihad confirmed the arrest to the Associated Press.
One Palestinian died immediately during the fighting after receiving a bullet to the eye according to Palestinian sources. Most of the injured were hit by rubber bullets.
The Israeli army said it was not aware of any casualties in the fighting. One soldier was described as being slightly wounded.
