The political thriller 'V For Vendetta' opened strongly at the box office this weekend, taking in $26.1 million to capture first place.
The film stars Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving in a story of the fight against a totalitarian regime in Great Britain in the future.
Last week's top grossing film, 'Failure to Launch,' starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey dropped to second place with $15.8 million in estimated gross receipts. In the first 10 days since its release, 'Failure to Launch' has taken in $48.5 million despite a generally negative response from critics.
Disney's remake of 'The Shaggy Dog' starring Tim Allen finished third with $13.6 million after finishing second a week ago. In 10 days, 'The Shaggy Dog' has an estimated gross of $35.9 million.
'She's the Man' opened in fourth place. The Amanda Bynes vehicle loosely based on Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' took in $11 million.
The remake of the horror film, 'The Hills Have Eyes' finished in fifth place with $8.1 million.
Rounding out the top 10 were '16 Blocks,' 'Eight Below,' 'Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion,' The remake of 'The Pink Panther' starring Steve Martin and the tween hit 'Aquamarine.'
One film opening in limited release scored big. 'Thank You For Smoking' took in $260,066 at five theaters for a whopping $52,013 average. The film is a satire about a PR man for the tobacco industry.
Overall, Hollywood's box office slump continues. The top 12 grossing films took in 11 percent less than they did a year ago.
