U.N. Finds No Evidence Milosevic Was Poisoned

Tests conducted by toxicologists who examined former Yugoslavian dictator Slobodan Milosevic say there is no evidence he died of poisoning.

Judge Fausto Pocar, the president of the U.N. war crimes tribunal said that blood tests showed no signs that Milosevic had received 'toxic concentrations' of any medication that was strong enough to kill him.

An autopsy conducted by Dutch authorities earlier this week indicated that Milosevic died of a heart attack in his jail cell while awaiting trial on charges of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Family members of Milosevic and their supporters have accused the U.N. of poisoning the former dictator. They have also claimed that Milosevic was not given proper medication or care for his heart condition while in U.N. custody.

An early toxicology test, conducted on an older blood sample from Milosevic found traces of the antibiotic rifampicin. Rifampicin could reduce the effectiveness of heart medication. The later test did not indicate any rifampicin was present in Milosevic's blood.

Milosevic was in the midst of a four-year long trial in which he was facing 66 charges of genocide, resulting from years of racial, ethnic and religious fighting in the former Yugoslavia that killed at least 250,000 people.

The body of the former dictator of Yugoslavia are now on display at a museum in Belgrade. Many Serb nationalists have lined up to view his body and pay final respects although the initial turnout has been lower than expected.
