'Failure To Launch' Succeeds At the Box Office

The star power of Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker was enough to overcome tepid reviews and catapult the romantic comedy 'Failure To Launch' to the top of this past weekend's domestic box office. In it's opening weekend, 'Failure To Launch' took in an estimated gross of $24.6 million.

Remakes from two opposite genres took home second and third place. Family fare finished in second place as Disney's remake of 'The Shaggy Dog' starring Tim Allen finished its opening weekend with an estimated gross of $16 million. Meanwhile, horror fans staked a remake of 'The Hills Have Eyes' to a third place finish with $15.5 million.

'Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion,' the top grossing film the past two weeks, fell to fifth place this weekend with $5.8 million, just behind '16 Blocks' which took in $7.3 million to earn fourth place honors.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Antarctic sled dog drama, 'Eight Below,' Tween girl flick 'Aquamarine,' Steve Martin's remake of 'The Pink Panther,' 'Ultraviolet' and the spoof 'Date Movie.'

Overall receipts for the top 12 grossing movies of the weekend were down 10.7 percent as compared to this same weekend last year. After an off-year at the box office in 2005, Hollywood can ill afford to see lower attendance at theaters in 2006.
