A building on New York City's Upper East Side collapsed Monday morning after an explosion and fire caused serious damage to the structure. Terrorism is not suspected in the incident which local authorities believe was caused by a gas explosion.
Two people were rushed to a local hospital while two others were treated at the scene of the incident for minor injuries according to a spokeswoman for the New York City Fire Department.
Clouds of black smoke are still rising from the rubble of the building as fire fighters search the area for those injured by the blast.
The fire was called in to the Fire Department at approximately 8:40 AM Monday morning, EDT.
The building had some medical offices but was primarily a residential structure according to residents at the scene.
Ann McGovern, an eyewitness to the incident who lives across the street from the collapsed building, told CNN she 'witnessed two bloody people exiting the building just minutes after the explosion.'
Rescue efforts continue at the site. An official investigation into the cause of the blast is also underway.
