Introduction to Ultraviolet-C Lights

The air conditioning coils in buildings and homes provide cool, moist gardens for the propagation of mold and other microorganisms. These organisms multiply ‘24/7’ into huge concentration of mold and biofilm deep inside the HVAC system. These microbial contaminants pass through the coil and enter the air stream, accounting for much of the illness and discomfort present in buildings today. They also significantly increase the maintenance, utility, and operating costs associated with commercial, industrial and residential HVAC systems.

The technology for ultraviolet germicidal irradiation has been successfully used for decades to sterilize air and purify water for room temperature applications. In the past when the existing equipment was exposed to the harsh environments of HVAC systems the lamps were quickly destroyed or rendered useless. In the last decade technological breakthroughs in ultra-violet-C (UVC) germicidal light systems has transformed how building owners, both commercial and residential address the costly and harmful issues of mold and poor indoor air quality.

UVC germicidal air purification is the effective only at specific ultraviolet wavelengths. This wavelength eradicates the surface and Airborne mold, dust, pollen, viruses and bacteria in a variety of ways including; the emission of high energy photons which break molecular bonds, the conversion of non-ionic organic molecules to charged species making them susceptible to ion exchange removal and by production of hydroxyl radicals which oxidize certain molecular bonds cause photochemical breakdown.
