The vampire film 'Underworld: Evolution' starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman managed to scare off the competition and claim the top spot at this weekend's box office. The film took in an estimated gross of $27.6 million over the weekend.
Last weekend's top grossing film, 'Hoodwinked,' came in a distant second this weekend with $11 million. The animated tale is a spirited re-imagining of the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood.'
'Glory Road' barely held on to the third spot. The inspirational story of the 1966 West Texas basketball team that became the first team with five black starters to win the NCAA title grossed $9.1 million this weekend.
Queen Latifah's remake of 'Last Holiday' also finished with $9.1 million but is estimated to have finished slightly behind 'Glory Road.'
Although none of the Golden Globe winners were in the top four, the film that won best drama, 'Brokeback Mountain,' did see a strong surge at the box office. The cowboy picture starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger finished fifth with $7.8 million in estimated gross receipts.
Other films receiving key Golden Globe awards such as 'Walk the Line' and 'Capote' also saw large bumps in their box office even though they failed to break the top 10.
Rounding out the top 10 were 'Fun With Dick and Jane,' 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,' 'Hostel,' 'The New World' and 'End of the Spear.'
Overall, Hollywood was pleased with this weekend as ticket sales for the top 12 grossing films were up nearly 17 percent over the same weekend a year ago.
