Family fare faired very well at the box office over the holiday weekend with 'Hoodwinked' grabbing the top spot in a close three-way race. The animated re-telling of the classic kids' tale of Little Red Riding Hood grossed an estimated $16.6 million to win top honors at the box office.
'Glory Road' was a close second with $16.5 million in gross receipts. The film tells the story of the 1966 Texas Western University basketball team which won the national championship with five African-American starters. The win practically forced colleges to integrate their teams if they wanted to win.
Third place belonged to another newcomer, Queen Latifah's 'Last Holiday' which grossed $15.7 million.
'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' continued to do well at the box office and finished fourth. 'Narnia' grossed an estimated $12.2 million this past weekend.
Last week's top grossing film, the horror film, 'Hostel' fell to fifth place with $11.7 million.
Jim Carrey's 'Fun With Dick and Jane' continued to fare well, grossing $10.3 million for sixth place. The film has done steady box office despite mixed reviews.
Rounding out the top 10 were Peter Jackson's remake of 'King Kong,' 'Tristan & Isolde,' the controversial 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2.'
Overall, box office receipts for the top 12 films fell a whopping 12 percent from the same weekend a year ago.
