Blair: Sanctions Likely Against Iran

British Prime Minister Tony Blair told the House of Commons that the west would likely seek sanctions against Iran for its defiant resumption of its nuclear research. Tehran re-started research on Tuesday after a two year suspension while entering into negotiations with the European Union.

'I think the first thing to do is to secure agreement for a reference to the Security Council, if that is indeed what the allies jointly decide, as I think seems likely,' Blair told the House of Commons.

'We obviously don't rule out any measures at all,' Blair said when asked about possible sanctions. 'It's important Iran recognizes how seriously the international community treats it.'

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in Moscow for discussions with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Rice admitted that the two had discussed the matter of Iran and that both Russia and the U.S. shared 'a deep disappointment' over Tehran's decision.

No timetable was announced for bringing the issue before the United Nations Security Counsel.
