Los Angeles, Jan. 29, 2006 – The appropriately named SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards on Sunday – we’re beginning to sag from the endless round of award shows – honored actors for their work; just like the Directors Guild Awards, the day before, honored directors’ accomplishments. And so we dragged ourselves to the Shrine Exposition Center, where all the attendees were far shinier and perkier than we were.
Felicity Huffman needs to write a new acceptance speech. Winning a SAG award for her TV role on "Desperate Housewives", Huffman delivered much the same speech that she did at the National Board of Review Awards, which recognized her film performance in "Transamerica". Granted, the NBR Awards wasn’t televised, but we’re filling you in.
SAG was a good night for "Desperate Housewives"; the entire cast was recognized for ensemble work. It was also a big evening for one family – Reese Witherspoon was named best actress, and her husband, Ryan Phillippe, was one of the winning movie ensemble, "Crash". Ensembles were a theme, with those huge casts and that of Lost crowding the stage to pick up awards. Back in the press room, we could barely fit each ensemble into a single photo.
You may have noticed that best supporting actress winner Rachel Weisz looked a bit zaftig; she has announced that she’s pregnant, and she’s starting to show.
"Brokeback Mountain" stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger got together again, for the second time in as many days, but didn’t pick up any awards. Nick Lachey was also overlooked; well, actually, he wasn’t nominated.
