India Ban Continues for Coca Cola, Pepsi

A state court in southern India has declined to lift a ban on soft drinks made by Coca Cola and Pepsi, which have been alleged to contain high levels of pesticide.

The court in Kerala state said Friday the ban would remain in effect at least until the issue is considered in a court session set for September 11.

The U.S.-based drink companies are challenging the ban, announced by the Kerala state government earlier this month.

Six other Indian states also have barred the drinks after the environmental research group Center for Science and Environment said it found traces of pesticide in the products.

Both companies have rejected the report, saying their drinks are safe. India's Health Ministry says the research group has failed to prove its claims.
