Very Close Friends in 'Trust the Man'

New York, August 7, 2006 – "Trust the Man" was all in the family, and not only because director Bart Freundlich featured his wife, Julianne Moore, in the romantic comedy. With one exception, the movie’s stars are old friends off-screen, and at the premiere on Monday, Moore said that made it a fun project. “You know, all of us have been friends for a really, really long time. Actually, the one person we didn’t know was Maggie [Gyllenhaal]. We became friends very quickly.”

Moore walked the red carpet with her eight-year-old son, Cal, who had spent some time on the set with mom and dad. Billy Crudup, practically unrecognizable due to some strange new facial hair, was surprisingly relaxed, and laughed at himself after delivering a rambling, grammatically challenged description of his character. “You can Google it; that whole sentence right there stands up to the test of time. That was more of a haiku, really.” (Crudup’s girlfriend, Claire Danes, was scheduled to attend, but we couldn’t find her.)

Photographers catcalled “Hold the baby” to Peter Sarsgaard, strolling with pregnant fiancée Maggie Gyllenhaal. and he shot back, “What, do you want me to act like I’m delivering it?”
The premiere fell on David Duchovny’s birthday, his 46th, and there was a big cake with candles later, at the after party hosted by Calvin Klein and the New York Observer.

By the way, we hadn’t yet seen "Trust the Man", so we were too embarrassed to ask about the girl-on-girl action we’d peeked back when they were shooting the film. They seemed to be really, really good friends.
