The American concert landscape is scheduled to become louder, more rousing, and inescapably dance-mad in late May, when acclaimed Virgin Records band WE ARE SCIENTISTS joins the chart-busting kings of British indie rock, Arctic Monkeys, for a three-week series of concert dates stretching from coast to coast, including three stops in Canada. This Stateside jaunt with Arctic Monkeys is a return engagement for the bands, following a series of European sellout gigs on the bill of the NME Shock Waves Tour.
WE ARE SCIENTISTS are Keith Murray (guitar and lead vocals), Chris Cain (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Michael Tapper (drums and backing vocals). The New York-based band has been criss-crossing North America on tour since the U.S. release of their Virgin debut album, WITH LOVE AND SQUALOR in early January.
The album was greeted by the European press as “post-punk of a particularly energetic and rambunctious sort…An accomplished pack of coiled, brash rock with a jarring energy softened by a catchy way with a tune” (NME), and WE ARE SCIENTISTS live dates have been described as “blistering, exuberant…something to behold” (The Independent). With enthusiastic BBC play of the single, “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt,” and a string of live triumphs on tour with the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park, Editors and others, WITH LOVE AND SQUALOR was certified for gold sales in the United Kingdom.
The American media chimed in immediately at the January 2006 U.S. release of WITH LOVE AND SQUALOR , with an A- rating from Newsday congratulating the band for “add(ing) a twist to the indie formula…to keep things interesting,” and a Spin rave review dubbing them “dance-rock geniuses.” The album was a No. 10 entry on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart on its American release.
