This April, motorcyclists are revving up their engines for a good cause. Kids. Cyclists from all over southeast Texas will participate in the 14th annual Houston Ride for Kids, a national program that raises funding and awareness for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of the United States. The foundation supports the search into the causes and cures of childhood brain tumors through research. Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer deaths in children under the age of 20, now surpassing acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Hundreds of participants will ride motorcycles, rain or shine, from the Pasadena Convention Center & Fairgrounds, through the scenic countryside. The event will then close with an awards presentation during which one lucky participant will win a brand new Honda motorcycle.
The event continues to grow larger every year with over 1000 motorcycles participating in the 2005 ride. In fact, Ride For Kids has become so large the event has been moved to the Pasadena Convention Center & Fairgrounds to accommodate the large number of participants and spectators. The amount of money raised by the event has grown as well, with last year's the event raising over $215, 000.00.
The celebrated country singer Lyle Lovett has always lent a helping hand to the event which takes place Sunday, April 30, 2006. The taskforce chairperson of the Houston event, Ronnie Lunsford of Bob Lunsford's Northwest Honda, says that Lyle is always an avid supporter of the Ride for Kids program. 'We are very fortunate to have Lyle. He is always ready to go the extra mile to help out the kids'. Lyle has attended the event in the past, and event coordinators are hopeful for his return.
