A suicide bomber struck American troops just outside an American military base in Lashkar Ghar, Afghanistan, located in the southern province of Helmand. The Americans were injured in the attack. Two were soldiers and one was a civilian contractor. The injuries were not described as serious.
A U.S. military spokesman in Afghanistan said, 'The suicide bomber was killed in the blast. A nearby pickup truck and the bomber's vehicle were destroyed.'
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack according to a report published in the 'Washington Post.'
This is the second attack on Western forces in Afghanistan in as many days. On Thursday, the main U.S. base in Afghanistan was attacked by a mortar bomb. One Afghan civilian was killed and three were wounded in that attack.
The American base that was attacked on Friday will soon be taken over by British troops. 3,300 British soldiers will be sent to the area which is located in the main opium-growing region of Afghanistan.
