A school bus overturned Friday on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx injuring more than 50 people according to local authorities. Forty-six of the injured were school children. None of the injuries appears to be serious.
The accident occurred at approximately 11:18 AM on the southbound side of the Deegan, near exit 12. A car was involved in the accident although local authorities would not be more specific pending the completion of their investigation into the accident.
'It is quite an incredible scene right here,' Fire Chief James Esposito told Fox News.
The front window of the bus was smashed. The back door and the overhead baggage racks were twisted and out of shape while the front grill of the bus was missing.
The children were all wearing seatbelts according to published reports. If they had not been, the injury toll would have been higher and some students may have even died.
The children on the bus were believed to be seventh graders although nobody would confirm which school they attended.
Three hospitals, Montefiore, Jacobi and North Bronx, were expecting to receive injured students from the accident.
The accident shut down traffic on the southbound side of the Deegan while two lanes of northbound traffic were also closed.
Authorities continue their investigation into the accident.
