A man suspected of committing a terrorist act was arrested at Manchester Airport in the UK on Friday and a suspicious package was detonated and destroyed by an army bomb squad. One suspect was arrested and taken into custody by police under Britain's new terrorism laws.
'At approximately 8:30 AM, police were called to Manchester Airport following reports that a man had been seen acting suspiciously in the apron area, where aircraft are parked,' said a statement issued by the Manchester Police.
The man resisted police as they attempted to arrest him and they used a Taser to stun and subdue him in order to take him into custody.
Two terminals at the airport were temporarily closed down as police investigated the matter. After the package was detonated, the terminals were reopened.
'There will be some delays to passengers but it is hoped that services will be back to normal soon,' said a spokeswoman for The National Air Traffic Services.
Some flights were delayed at Manchester Airport as a result of the incident. However, officials say that Europe's 12th busiest airport should be back on normal schedule shortly.
The identity of the man has not been released at this time although a published report by the BBC said he was of Asian appearance and did not speak much English. Officials are continuing to investigate the situation.
