A strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale has struck near the New Ireland region of Papua New Guinea Friday. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 25 miles east-southeast of the city of Taron or approximately 540 miles northeast of the capital city of Port Moresby.
The earthquake took place at 5:27 PM local time or 3:27 AM EDT. No injuries or major damage was reported as a result of this strong earthquake.
In addition, experts at the Japan Meteorological Agency indicate that there is no danger of tsunamis from this particular quake. The reason: the epicenter of the quake was located very deep underground.
Papua New Guinea is located in the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' and is often hit by earthquakes and other seismic activity.
The region is expecting aftershocks intermittently throughout the Friday evening and into Saturday.
