Rookie Mike Morse of the Seattle Mariners became the ninth major league player to be suspended this season under baseball's new steroids policy. As a result of failing a drug test, Morse will sit out the next 10 games of the season.
Morse, 23, was hitting .287 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 209 major league at bats this season. He spent the early part of the season in AAA.
Seattle acquired Morse along with outfielder Jeremy Reed and catcher Miguel Olivo in the July 27, 2004 trade that sent pitcher Freddy Garcia to the Chicago White Sox.
Morse becomes the third member of the Mariners to be suspended under the new drug program. Both pitcher Ryan Franklin and outfielder Jamal Strong were suspended for 10 games each earlier this year.
Morse had just hit the game winning RBI in the Mariners 3-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night in Oakland.
As per major league baseball's policy, the exact substance Morse tested positive for was not revealed. The suspension will begin Wednesday night.
