'Doom,' the sci-fi film based on a video game, managed to capture the top spot at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $15.4 million. The film, which stars ex-wrestler 'The Rock' took first place in a weak weekend which saw box office receipts for the top 12 grossing films down 27 percent from the same weekend a year ago.
Second place went to another new film, 'Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story,' which stars Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning. The film, which is about a horse racing family, took in $9.3 million in its opening weekend.
'Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit' held on to third place with $8.7 million in estimated gross receipts followed by last week's top grossing film, 'The Fog' which took in $7.3 million after receiving poor reviews.
'North Country' debuted in a very disappointing fifth place with just $6.5 million. The film stars Charlize Theron as a Minnesota mineworker who sues the mining company and her co-workers for sexual discrimination. Based on a true story, the film received generally poor reviews and did poor box office.
Films that opened in limited release fared better. 'Shopgirl' written and starring Steve Martin along with Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman took in $236,000 in only eight theaters and received very positive marks from most critics. 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang' starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer also opened in only eight theaters and took in $174,300.
Rounding out the top 10 this week were Cameron Crowe's 'Elizabethtown,' 'Flightplan,' 'In Her Shoes,' 'A History of Violence' and 'Two for the Money.'
