Capturing The Kerry Campaign

New York, October 2 – We have a strict no-review policy here at Open All Night, because we’re not critics and we have no idea what we’re talking about. However, we do have issues with the documentary "Inside the Bubble", the behind the scenes look at the 2004 John Kerry presidential campaign that has Washington abuzz.

The documentary’s first public screening took place during the New York Television Festival this week, and the audience included Steve Van Zandt, who did concerts on the Kerry circuit, New York politico Mark Green and Lewinski/Clinton scandal enabler Lucianne Goldberg, who may be out for Kerry's blood. Kerry staffers, denied an advance screening, hurried out before the lights came up.

While some say it makes Kerry look bad, some say it humanizes him and others say the film is just boring, we at OAN followed along the campaign trail, and we say that filmmaker Steve Rosenbaum missed all of the important themes that defined Kerry/Edwards 2004.

Kerry had mixed feelings about his chief advisor, Ben Affleck, who suddenly disappeared from campaign stops without explanation. Did this have to do with Affleck’s political advice, or did Kerry want to avoid all appearances of conflict of interest when it became clear that Affleck was hooking up with Kerry’s daughter, Vanessa?

Did Kerry wonder why his handsome, mega-rich stepson Chris Heinz was still single? (We sure did.) And a documentary should update us when it’s completed. How does Vanessa Kerry feel about Affleck’s subsequent impregnation of and marriage to Jennifer Garner? And, more important, is Chris Heinz still single as of release date? (We can totally fix him up.)

Kerry supporter Diddy, who still had a “P” in his name back then, even flew around the country threatening people with death if they didn’t vote. (Remember “Vote or Die”?) The film doesn’t show how Kerry felt about that, or about the support iof other important cultural icons like Kirsten Dunst, Ashlee Simpson and Uma Thurman.

Maybe we’ll just do our own documentary.
