Park police in Washington DC evacuated the Washington Monument on Friday after they received a bomb threat that the large obelisk was going to be attacked.
The threat was made at 2:24 EDT Friday afternoon via telephone call Sergeant Scott Fear of the National Park Police told CNN.
Park police evacuated the 555-foot monument that is the tallest structure in our nation's capital and all of the streets around it. After a one-hour initial investigation, nothing suspicious was found.
'It's obviously an ongoing investigation,' Fear added. 'Once we finish that check, we should be able to reopen the Washington Monument.'
No timetable has been given as to when the landmark would be re-opened to the public.
Carrie Edler, 42, a tourist from Los Angeles, told Reuters after the evacuation, 'I think it's sad, it's pathetic, it's becoming an every day occurrence. It's becoming a way of life though.'
