The NFL announced on Thursday that the city of Miami will host the 2010 Super Bowl. The other finalists were Atlanta and Houston but the NFL owners elected to have Miami host its 10th Super Bowl.
The first time the game was played in Miami was Super Bowl II back in 1968 when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-14 in Vince Lombardi's last game as Packers head coach.
The 2010 game was conditionally awarded to New York but when a stadium deal for the Jets on the West Side of Manhattan fell through, the game was put back up for grabs. Without a new domed stadium, New York would not be an appropriate venue to host a Super Bowl.
Atlanta and Houston were considered the favorites to be awarded the game since Miami is already scheduled to play host to the 2007 game. Miami has previously hosted two Super Bowls in a row, although that was in 1968 and 1969.
Miami will surpass New Orleans as the most popular host city for the Super Bowl with 10. It last hosted the Super Bowl in 1999 when the Denver Broncos defeated the Atlanta Falcons to win their second consecutive Super Bowl.
