An outdoor holiday music concert in the southern city of Sangju, South Korea, turned deadly on Monday. Thousands of people surged to enter the gates of a stadium and those at the front of the procession were crushed by the oncoming wave of humanity. At least 11 people were killed and 50 others injured according to local officials.
Eight of the 11 dead were either children or elderly people according to a spokesman for the organizers of the concert, broadcaster MBC.
The problem was that there were more than 30,000 people waiting to get in to a concert venue that could hold only 10,000.
'We have people who injured their heads or chests or have broken bones,' said a nurse at Sangju Red Cross Hospital told Reuters.
The concert was scheduled to commemorate Foundation Day which celebrates the legendary foundation of Korea in the year 2333 BC.
Sangju is a city located approximately two hours southeast of the South Korean capital of Seoul. It has a population of approximately 120,000.
