New York, November 2, 2005 – Women have come so far, and accomplished so much, we were thinking at Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year Awards on Wednesday. Tennis star Venus Williams, reporter Christiane Amanpour, and Grammy-winning cancer survivor Melissa Etheridge were recognized for their achievements. Fashion designer Diane von Furstenburg, and actresses Goldie Hawn and Catherine Zeta-Jones were also honored. The least famous awardee, Pakistani women’s rights activist Mukhtar Mai, brought the biggest round of applause.

So why do women still cram themselves into slinky frocks? We caught Venus Williams, Zoe Saldana and Petra Nemcova holding up their dresses to avoid embarrassing malfunctions. Von Furstenburg stopped to adjust the sash around Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei’s waist. Why doesn’t a woman invent a technology that will keep dresses from drooping? She’ll make a lot of money, and probably win an award, because having your dress fall off is decidedly a Glamour Don't.
