Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein will be put on trial within the next two months according to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani. In an interview with CNN on Tuesday, Talabani said, 'the court of Iraq will decide the future of Saddam Hussein.'
According to Talabani, there is strong public sentiment in Iraq to execute Hussein if he is found guilty. His guilt seems a foregone conclusion. 'Saddam Hussein is a war criminal,' Talabani said, adding that he had committed 'crimes against Iraqi people.'
Among the crimes Hussein is likely to be charged with are the use of poison gas on his own citizens in Kurdistan, torturing prisoners, killing political opponents, invading Kuwait and stealing millions of dollars from the Iraqi people.
Saddam was captured by American forces in December 2003. He was found hiding in an underground hole near his hometown of Tikrit. Hussein was arraigned in July without the benefit of defense counsel. He will be tried by a special Iraqi tribunal.
