The final installment of the 'Star Wars' saga shows few signs of slowing down at the box office. 'Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith' easily captured first place at the box office over the Memorial Day weekend, grossing $70.75 million. In the 10 days since its release, 'Sith' has now grossed $271.2 million dollars in domestic box office and more than $504 million worldwide.
"Revenge of the Sith" was already earning repeat business especially among young males according to industry observers. It is likely to continue to be a force at the box office for weeks to come.
Two new films also opened very strongly. The animated feature 'Madagascar' featuring the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer earned $61 million for the weekend while the remake of 'The Longest Yard' starring Adam Sandler and Burt Reynolds finished a close third with a $60 million gross.
Both 'Madagascar' and 'The Longest Yard' filled important box office niches. The former was the strongest film for younger children many of whom would find the violence of 'Sith' too intense. 'The Longest Yard' had an audience of young males who tend to be Sandler's biggest fans.
'Monster-in-Law' finished a distant fourth with just over $11 million, followed by 'Kicking and Screaming,' 'Crash,' 'The Interpreter,' 'Unleashed,' 'Kingdom of Heaven' and 'House of Wax.'
