Israel Arrests Jewish Extremists Planning to Attack Temple Mount

Three right wing Jewish extremists were arrested for planning an attack on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in order to disrupt and prevent Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip this August.

The three suspects have been placed under house arrest by a Jerusalem court. They were first apprehended last month by the joint sting operation between Israeli police and the Shin Bet, Israel's secret spy agency.

The plan the three extremists had was to obtain a missile and then fire it at the Al Aqsa Mosque, located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The Temple Mount is the holiest place to the Jewish faith and the site of the two biblical Holy Temples. The Al Aqsa mosque was built on top of the ruins of the temple. It is considered the third holiest site in the Muslim religion and the place where Muslims believe the prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.

According to a report in the 'Jerusalem Post,' the prime suspect in the case is 21-year-old Avtalion Kadosh, a Bratslev Hassid. Kadosh reportedly asked a friend, Eyal Karmani, 23, of Rehovot if he could procure a Lau missile and grenades to carry out the attack. Kadosh's brother, Akiva, 25, was involved in the plan but later refused to cooperate according to authorities.

Police reports say that Avtalion Kadosh hoped his attack would 'create a third intifadah, and a war with the Arabs which would stop the Gaza pullout plan and bring about the transfer of Arabs from Israel.'

The attorney for the three defendants called the entire case a 'Shin Bet provocation.'

The Israeli government will be on high alert this summer as the unilateral Gaza withdrawal proceeds. Besides attacking the Temple Mount, authorities fear an assassination attempt against Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
