Banned Red Dye Believed to Cause Cancer Shows Up in More Foods

Another 35 products have been taken off the market because they have been found to contain an illegal red dye that is a suspected carcinogen according to the British Food Standards Agency.

The coloring was originally found in cayenne pepper which was then used as an ingredient in many other products.

The dye is called Para Red and is very similar to Sudan 1, the dye that caused more than 350 products to be taken off the market earlier this year. Sudan 1 was originally found in a bottle of Worcestershire sauce.

Dr. Andrew Wadge the FSA's director of food safety told the BBC, 'Para Red - like Sudan 1 - is an illegal dye that should not be in food. At the levels being found the risk is likely to be very small indeed, but it is right that food businesses are removing these products from sale.'

Para Red is an industrial dye and is not supposed to be used in food preparation. Its most common use is in printing ink. The FSA expected that more foods could be added to the list as it continues to investigate the situation.
