Yankees Change Lineup But Results Remain the Same

The New York Yankees changed their lineup in an attempt to snap themselves out of a disappointing start to the 2005 season. But the team with the highest payroll and most impatient owner in baseball couldn't change the end result, losing to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11-4.

Yankees starting pitcher Kevin Brown (0-4) was roughed up early, giving up six runs in the first inning as the Devil Rays batted around. Eight of the first nine hitters Brown faced reached base.

Brown pitched five shaky innings, allowing eight runs on a career-high 13 hits. He has now lost seven straight starts dating back to last season.

Tampa Bay snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win. Starter Doug Waechter (1-1) was the beneficiary of his team's big first inning and cruised to his first win of the year.

The Yankees revamped lineup did little to change the team's fortunes. Hideki Matsui moved to center field, displacing veteran Bernie Williams. Second baseman Tony Womack moved out to left field and minor league prospect Robinson Cano made his major league debut at second base.
Cano was 0 for three in his big league debut.

Travis Phelps led the Tampa Bay attack, driving in three runs including two in the first inning.

The win improved Tampa Bay to 9-18 on the season while the Yankees fell to a disappointing 11-16.
