Major League baseball announced Monday that Minnesota Twins pitcher Juan Rincon has been suspended for 10 days for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. The suspension begins immediately.
Rincon's agent, Ed Setlik said his client planned a grievance. 'Suffice it to say, he was devastated and stunned by the result,' Setlik said.
Unlike other disciplinary suspensions, the filing of a grievance does not stay the appeal pending a decision so Rincon will be unavailable to the Twins starting with tomorrow's home game against the Cleveland Indians. Minnesota has an off day on Monday.
Rincon has an annual salary of $440,000 so the 10 day suspension will cost him $24,044. It will also hamper his chances of reaching bonuses he has in his contract for appearing in 68 or 78 games this year.
Last year, Rincon had an 11-6 record and 2 saves with an ERA of only 2.63. He appeared in 77 games in relief for Minnesota.
The 26-year-old Rincon is only 5'11'' but weighs 200 pounds and throws a fastball that tops out at an impressive 94 miles per hour. He is considered one of the up and coming set up men in baseball.
Setlik told the Associated Press he believes Rincon can work out with the team during his suspension but cannot be in uniform for games or even in the clubhouse.
The Twins called up right hander Scott Baker from their AAA affiliate in Rochester to fill Rincon's spot on the roster.
