Bryant Jackson, the only man charged with a felony as a result of the outrageous 'basketbrawl' incident at the Palace at Auburn Hills on November 19 has pleaded 'no contest' to felony assault charges today in a Pontiac, Michigan courtroom.
Jackson was accused of dislodging a chair at the Pistons-Pacers game and throwing it over his head. He also was accused of throwing beer on visiting Pacers players as they left the court.
Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Rae Lee Chabot indicated that she could give Jackson, 37, up to three months in jail. If Jackson is contrite during sentencing, however, she may give him only probation.
Paul Walton, the prosecutor in the case, said he would request a one year jail sentence for Jackson. 'These are adults,' Walton said. 'They should be able to control themselves. If they can't, they should be in jail.'
Three other fans were given probation as a result of their involvement in the melee. A hearing is scheduled for April 8 for the remaining four fans and the five Pacers players who were charged in the brawl.
Ron Artest of Indiana received the biggest penalty from the NBA for his involvement in the fracas. He was suspended for the remainder of the season after he went into the stands to attack a fan who allegedly threw beer at him.
Jackson's sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 3.
