Marburg Virus Death Toll Rises in Angola

Five more people, including a 19-year-old pregnant woman, have died from the Marburg virus in Angola, raising the death toll to 121. The South African-based Netcare Travel Clinic is advising people not to travel to Angola for at least a week. Andrew Jamieson of the Johannesburg-based clinic warned, 'Travelers planning to go to Angola should not go there unless it's absolutely necessary.' Some Angolans are beginning to make plans to evacuate temporarily.

The virus first broke out in Uige province in October, but has now appeared in Luanda, the capital. There are now 132 people being hospitalized with the virus including a tourist from Portugal. Deputy health minister Jose Van-Dumen has stated, 'This is extremely serious -- strong preventative measures are needed to contain this outbreak of Marburg disease.'

The virus first appeared in 1967 and seemed to affect researchers who were working with monkeys. The virus appeared in Angola in October, but has gained momentum in the last month. The World Heath Organization (WHO), has stated that 75 percent of the victims of this outbreak have been children under five.
