The critics weren't kind but audiences flocked to see 'Guess Who?' the updated version of the 1967 classic 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.' The new version stars comedian Bernie Mac as a black father whose daughter is about to marry Ashton Kutcher her white fiancee. The film took in an estimated $21 million in its opening weekend to capture first place at the box office.
The premise was loosely based on the 1967 classic starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn as white parents whose daughter brings home Sidney Poitier as her fiancee. While 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' was serious social commentary, 'Guess Who' is strictly a low brow comedy. Still, it seemed to connect with audiences over Easter weekend.
'Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous,' starring Sandra Bullock was also slammed by critics but finished second over the weekend at the box office, taking in $14.5 million from Friday until Sunday. The film opened Wednesday of last week and has taken in a total of $17.6 million since its release.
Last week's top grossing film, 'The Ring 2' slipped to third at the box office with gross receipts estimated at $13.8 million.
Two family oriented films rounded out the top five with 'Robots' taking in $13 million and 'The Pacifier' another $8.5 million over the holiday weekend.
Will Smith's 'Hitch,' 'Hostage,' 'Ice Princess,' 'Be Cool' and 'Million Dollar Baby' rounded out the top 10.
