Health officials at the U.S. Center for Disease Control have identified a virus that is beginning to kill people in Angola as the Marburg virus, a strain in the same family of viruses as Ebola. Joseph Van Dunem, the deputy health minister of Angola has confirmed that this virus was found in 12 samples tested.
So far, 107 cases have been reported, and 96 people have died. These cases were identified at the main hospital in the Uige region of the country. This disease is known to kill 25 percent of those stricken, and there is no known treatment.
This particular strain of the virus in typified by high fever, jaundice, severe weight loss, pancreatic inflammation, and finally massive internal bleeding. There is normally a five to ten day incubation period.
Initially, doctors suspected the disease was Ebola, but were concerned that this outbreak seems to be striking mostly children under the age of five. Ebola normally strikes all ages. Marburg disease has been recognized for nearly forty years.
