Skin Cancer Rates May Triple in UK by 2035

Researchers as Cancer Research UK are warning that cases of malignant melanoma may triple in the next thirty years. Currently, over 7,000 people are diagnosed with the deadliest form of skin cancer each year, and 1,700 people die from it. That's a frightening 24 percent death rate. If these predictions come to pass, the number of cases could go up to 20,000 by 2035 with nearly 5,000 deaths.

Additionally, people will be diagnosed at younger ages. Historically, these melanomas had been found in people who are in their 50s. Now the children of the 1970s are being diagnosed at the same rate as their parents.

One reason for this dramatic increase may be an increase in global warming, which increases the intensity of the sun. Brits are traveling more than ever, and vacationing in warmer climates, thus getting more sun.

In view of these findings, experts are urging that everyone take precautions to avoid exposure to harsh sun. Those prone to sunburn should always avoid direct sun between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and use a sunscreen with at least a 15 factor. When exposure to direct sunlight cannot be avoided, wear a cover-up and brimmed hat.

As with all diseases, early diagnosis is key to saving lives. Be aware of a change in color, size, or outline of a mole. Any bleeding of a mole or itching is also reason for concern.

'One of the important messages is to persuade people, especially youngsters and those with fair skins, to avoid excess sun exposure and burning,' said Robert Souhami, a professor at the Cancer Research UK.
