SPITALFIELD – 'Stop Doing Bad Things'

With Dan Lowder on guitar, JD Romero on drums, T.J. Minich on bass, and Mark Rose on vocals/guitar, they’re Spitalfield and they’re hitting the alt/Indie/Emo world with their new CD, “Stop Doing Bad Things.” Formed in Chicago, the band has been traveling around the U.S. spreading their new music everywhere. Spitalfield have been featured in print media across the country.. “‘Spitalfield could be placed in the “emo” category but they do have their own unique style in comparison to other bands out there. Fans agree, and they are amazing live! –Brittany Hohn, 16, East Brunswick, NJ was quoted in Teen People, “With a poetic perspective, their lyrics will take you on a ride from the very first song, pulsing through your body, compelling you to only hear more. If you loved Spitalfield’s last CD, “Remember Right Now”, you’re sure to love this one.”

INTERVIEW WITH DAN LOWDER(Guitar):

Tay:When was your band formed and how did you all meet? Who are the band members, what is their music background, and where are you all from?

Daniel: Spitalfield was originally formed back in 1998. There are two original members left, those being Mark and JD. They've known each other since grade school, so we get lots of embarrassing stories about each of them from the other. From what I'm told, they started the band as a side project for their grindcore (Mark in Landmine) and youth crew (JD in x Strength in Numbers x) bands. Before I was in Spitalfield, I was the bass player in a wonderful/crappy/wonderful band called Don't Worry About It. We spent most of our time ripping off Naked Raygun and drinking 40 oz. bottles of Steel Reserve. For some reason, Mark thought I'd make a suitable replacement on guitar, although (secretly) I had no idea how to play. I still don't. Teejay is the newest member of Spitalfield, having joined in 2002. He was in a slew of bands before, but I think Knockout is probably the one people are most likely to have heard of; that's how we met him. He can also play "Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden backwards. We're all from out west of Chicago, except for Teejay. He's from Canada.

Tay:What kind of audience are you targeting?

Daniel:Personally, I don't have a target audience at all. Perhaps my friends back home? I don't know. I'm sorry, my strong suit was never marketing. I know that Teejay wants a lot more metal kids to come out to shows, and JD wants the glam rock kids to come out to the shows. Mark's a sucker for the baked goods target market. I mean ideally I'd like the fan base to be rowdy, loud, and fun. We love hecklers too. So I suppose that, in conclusion, you might say that our target audience is anyone willing to listen.

Tay:Tell us about the new CD, when does it come out?

Daniel: Our new CD is called "Stop Doing Bad Things", and it comes out on March 22nd of this year. Not only is that soon, but it's also the day that I'm turning 24. Not that it matters at all once you're past 21. I think I can rent cars now, perhaps. We're all very excited to get it out and about; we've been itching to play new songs for a long time now, so it'll come as a relief to us. Personally, I think that it's a marked improvement from our last album, both in terms of the songwriting as well as the production. Ed Rose is a wizard on a mixing console, let me tell you. And ladies, he looks like Ewan McGregor; just... with a Kansas accent.

Tay:Do you have a tour planned? What cities? When are the dates?

Tay: Which song do you think will be the first single and why? Will you have music video coming out?

Daniel:Our first single is going to be "Gold Dust vs. State of Illinois". When we finished recording and sat back to discuss what we felt would make the best first single for us, we really couldn't come to any sort of conclusion. Nothing sounded like an obvious single. So, we just kinda asked people directly involved in the process of the record what they thought-- and there you go! We made a music video for it the last time we were home. The best part for me: I got to wear silk; just like Patrick Swayze in "Ghost".

Tay:Will you be performing on any TV shows this year?

Daniel:Performing on TV? As far as I know right now, nobody cares enough to call. I'd love to play for Conan O'Brien. Also, I've had this recurring daydream of somehow finagling my way onto the set of TRL with suction cups, climbing up the windows from the inside, and forcing a bizarre and awkward period of minutes onto the MTV viewing audience. I think that'd be great. It's a shame that Carson left, though. I really had it out for him.
