A deadly disease has killed at least 77 people in Angola. Most of the dead and sick are children. The World Health Organization says that although it is similar to the Ebola virus, the new disease is not Ebola but it is a type of hemorrhagic fever.
The disease is centered around the town of Uige, approximately 140 miles north of Luanda. Health officials are advising people not to travel to or near Uige.
'Most of the city has been affected, but some areas are worse hit than others. We ruled out Ebola on Monday,' Health Ministry spokesman Carlos Alberto told Reuters.
Symptoms of the disease include high fever, diarrhea and vomiting. 83 people have been infected with the disease thus far and 77 have died.
WHO spokesman Joe Caentano told Reuters, 'The situation is now under control. Our problem is trying to get the sick to go to health centers. We are trying to encourage people who feel any of the symptoms to get medical attention as quickly as possible.'
Health officials are trying to prevent the spread of the new disease to larger population centers.
