Ramush Haradinaj, the prime minister of Kosovo announced his resignation today shortly after being indicted by the United Nations war crimes tribunal at the Hague.
Haradinaj was a senior commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army, an Albanian rebel group which opposed Serb troops in 1998-1999. While Albanians view Haradinaj as a true patriot and hero, Serbs have accused him of war crimes.
'I am one of those accused,' Haradinaj told reporters. 'As a result of this indictment I have resigned.'
Haradinaj will travel to the Hague Wednesday and has announced that he will cooperate with the tribunal in the case against him.
Deputy Prime Minister Adem Salihaj will run the government until a new prime minister can be appointed.
Soren Jessen-Petersen, the head of the U.N. Mission in Kosovo told CNN, 'Thanks to Ramush Haradinaj's dynamic leadership, strong commitment and vision, Kosovo is today closer than ever before to achieving its aspirations in settling its future status. Personally, I am saddened to no longer be working with a close partner and friend.'
That friend now faces an uncertain future until the charges against him can be resolved.
