A California man is in critical condition after he and his wife were attacked by two chimpanzees who escaped from their cage at the Animal Haven Ranch in Caliente, California.
The couple, 62-year-old St. James Davis and his wife LaDonna were at the Animal Haven Ranch to visit their former pet chimp Moe. They had sent Moe to the ranch in 1999 after he started behaving too aggressively.
The Davis's has brought Moe a cake to celebrate his birthday and were standing just outside the chimp cage when two other chimpanzees named Buddy and Ollie escaped from their cage and attacked Mr. Davis.
Saint James Davis suffered severe injuries from the attack. His nose will require surgery to be reattached and his testicles and a foot were reportedly severed. He is in critical condition in a local hospital. His wife, LaDonna, suffered bite injuries to the hand when she tried to get the attacking animals off of her husband.
Both Buddy and Ollie were shot and killed after the attack. Two other chimps escaped during the incident but were recaptured and returned to their cage.
Officials at the ranch do not know how the two chimps escaped.
