The Irish rock band U2 went to court on Tuesday as part of their case against the band's former hairstylist, Lola Cashman. In the suit, Bono and the band claim that Cashman stole Bono's pants, Stetson hat, earrings and sweatshirt and they are asking for its return.
Cashman maintains that Bono gave the items to her as a gift after a concert in Arizona in December 1987.
Bono testified on Tuesday that that was not the case. He went as far as to claim that the Stetson hat is a U2 'icon' because he wore it in so many of the band's concerts and photos during that time period.
'It would be like The Edge giving one of his guitars away,' Bono claimed. 'It is not something which will happen.'
On cross examination, Cashman's attorney, Hugh Hartnett, contended that in 1987, such items would not have been considered iconic as of yet. Bono was quick to answer. 'Oh no, we had delusions of grandeur from the very beginning,' he claimed.
Cashman had attempted to auction off some of the items in 2002 but the members of the band got an injunction preventing her from selling them.
There is a long standing feud between Cashman and U2. In 2004, Cashman published a tell-all book, 'Inside the Zoo With U2: My Life With the World's Biggest Rock Band.'
After U2 sued Cashman to stop the sale of the items from the auction, Cashman counter sued for defamation of character since Bono and company claimed she had stolen the items.
The fight goes on, but it is doubtful Bono or Cashman will find what they are looking for.
