Drug manufacturer Pfizer, Inc., the makers of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra has stated that after a review of popular medication, it could find no connection between Viagra and an increased risk of blindness.
Despite these reassurances, a report by Reuters indicates that Pfizer is in negotiations with the Food and Drug Administration to revise the warning label on bottles of Viagra. The new label would include warnings of the rare occurrence of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a serious vision condition that can cause blindness. Recently, a very small number of patients taking Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications reported cases of NAION to the FDA.
The FDA found no causal relationship between Viagra and NAION as of yet but Pfizer and the FDA agreed to add a warning of the remote possibility of NAION to the warning labels to help keep both doctors and patients aware of the possible side effects.
