Hall & Oates, one of the most successful pop duos of the 80s is reuniting for a live performance Monday night, June 27 at 6:00 PM EDT on XM Satellite Radio. The exclusive performance will be broadcast on XM channel 200 (XM Live), channel 8 (The 80s), channel 7 (the 70s) and channel 25 (The Blend).
The duo has a new album out called 'Our Kind of Soul' which features covers of soul hits that influenced their music.
Daryl Hall was excited about the way the new album was made. 'The thing is, we didn't even listen to the records. We just did these
songs from memory. If we didn't remember the words, we would make words up. Throw bridges out, make new bridges, change keys…Every song
that we picked was either written or performed by a friend or sometimes both,' Hall explained.
The music industry has changed since Hall & Oates burst onto the scene in the 70s. Now, with iPods and song downloads on the Internet, there is less emphasis placed on albums.
'We still think of music in those terms as
opposed to just something that stands on its own,' Oates admitted. 'We think about a
group of songs that work together to create a mood and sustain a mood.'
Both singers said they were impressed by one modern development: 'American Idol.'
'It's honest,' Hall explained. 'Everybody might think, you know, it's like professional wrestling or something and villain and the good
guy. But you know something, it's all real. If somebody says they don't like somebody, they don't like somebody.'
'And the crowd,' Oates said. 'The studio audience really responds. They respond honestly to the performances.'
Hall & Oates were amused by the fact that President Bush was rumored to have added, 'Make My Dreams Come True' to his iPod.
