An explosion in southern Afghanistan wounded four American soldiers on patrol near Kandahar according to a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition forces. The cause of the blast was a roadside bomb according to Colonel James Yonts of the Combined Forces Command.
The bomb exploded by a provisional reconstruction team (PRT). PRT's are a group of between 40 and 80 civilians and military specialists who help in rebuilding projects and/or provide security for aid workers within Afghanistan.
Yonts told reporters, 'It is a sad thing when ... provincial reconstruction teams supporting ... (the) Afghan people are attacked by someone in this nature,' Yonts said. 'PRT ... is here to support the Afghan people, they are not here as combat forces.'
The four wounded Americans were taken to Kandahar Airfield. One of the four was seriously injured in the explosion.
Coalition forces are launching an investigation into the blast.
