The Arizona Diamondbacks selected high school shortstop Justin Upton with the first overall selection in baseball's annual draft on Tuesday.
Upton stands 6'1'' and weighs 195 pounds. The 17-year-old is presently a senior at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia.
'We feel Justin is a potential impact player in the major leagues in the future,' Arizona scouting director Mike Rizzo told Major League Baseball's official Web Site.
'He was the top guy on our board. The college pitching was something that had some allure to us, it was just too tough to pass up this player.'
Upton's brother, BJ Upton is presently with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays AAA affiliate in Durham. The D'Rays selected BJ Upton with the second overall pick in 2002.
Despite the trend towards selecting college pitchers, the first pitcher wasn't taken until the sixth overall pick of the draft when the Blue Jays picked Ricardo Romero of Cal State Fullerton. Seven of the first 10 selections this year were position players.

2) Kansas City Royals, Alex Gordon, third baseman, University of Nebraska Lincoln
