Minnesota Vikings running back Onterrio Smith has been suspended by the NFL for the entire 2005 season due to Smith violating the league's substance abuse program. The one year suspension means that this is Smith's third violation of league drug policy.
The suspension has been anticipated by the Vikings and league officials. Smith has been a repeat offender and recently had an embarrassing incident take place at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Smith was stopped by security at the airport on April 21 and his bags were searched. Inside one of his bags, authorities found some vials of dried urine and a device known as 'The Original Whizzinator.' The Whizzinator is a plastic prosthetic penis designed to help people beat drug tests. Smith claimed the device was for his cousin.
While possessing a Whizzinator is not in and of itself a violation of the league's drug policy, Smith obviously committed some other infraction over the off-season.
Smith was expected to compete for the Vikings starting halfback position along with Michael Bennett and Mewelde Moore. Smith missed four games last season due to a drug suspension.
The NFL would not comment on the specifics of Smith's infraction.
