The animated film 'Madagascar' climbed to the top of the box office charts this weekend with a gross of $28.7 million. Last week, the film finished second but the family oriented film from DreamWorks SKG overtook 'Star Wars: Episode III-- Revenge of the Sith' and edged out Adam Sandler's remake of 'The Longest Yard.'
A star studded cast provided the voices for 'Madagascar' including Ben Stiller who plays a lion who desires to return to the wild from the Central Park Zoo. Comedian Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith also star in the film. It has now grossed $101 million since its release.
'The Longest Yard finished the weekend with $26.1 million in gross receipts while 'Revenge of the Sith' was a close third with $26 million. The final film in the 'Star Wars' saga has now taken in $308.8 million in the United States since it opened. The last film in the series, 'Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones' took in just over $310 million domestically in its entire release. Experts expect the film to top the $400 million mark at the box office before its run is over.
The top newcomer of the weekend was 'Cinderella Man,' the story of boxer Jim Braddock who overcame the Great Depression to inspire Americans who were down and out. The film stars Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger and is directed by Ron Howard. It took in $18.6 million.
Two other new films took home fifth and sixth place this weekend. The teen film 'The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' opened with $10.25 million to round out the top five while 'The Lords of Dogtown,' which glorifies skateboarding finished in the sixth slot with $5.7 million.
Rounding out the top 10 were 'Monster-in-Law,' 'Crash,' 'Kicking & Screaming' and 'Unleashed.'
